The comics business is a funny thing. Some artists hit upon their signature character early in their careers and never look back. Some pay their dues for years, maybe decades, taking any and every assignment that comes their way. Some pay their dues, then hit it big, but still like to kick back and draw work-for-hire illustrations every now and then, either as a favor to an editor, because of nostalgia, or sometimes just for the paycheck. Comic book writers are even more prone to this, as a free couple of weeks in your schedule can very easily translate into an oddball miniseries or one-shot a few months down the road.
